The Joseon Tongsinsa
Card meaning
Upright - when people travel back and forth, a road appears. This card sends the first greeting.
Reversed - when the missions stop, only the records remain. Leave the records behind.
The tale
The Tongsinsa were diplomatic missions sent by Joseon to Japan.
Twelve missions were sent between 1607 and 1811, after the Imjin War.
Each mission numbered in the hundreds and travelled from Hanyang to Edo.
Writing, painting and brush conversation were exchanged along the way.
The related records were inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register in 2017.
