Jang Bogo
Card meaning
Upright - one who opens a route chooses the harbour first. This card is about deciding where to stand.
Reversed - moor every ship in one harbour and a single wind shakes them all.
The tale
Jang Bogo was a man of Silla who served as a soldier in Tang China.
He returned to Silla and set up Cheonghaejin on Wando in 828.
From Cheonghaejin he managed the sea routes of the west and south coasts.
Trade linking Silla, Tang and Japan was carried on in this period.
The Cheonghaejin site remains on Wando.
