Borimsa Temple was founded in 1957 and is located at the entrance of Sara-bong Peak in Jeju. The temple complex includes Daeungjeon (Main Hall), Beopdang (Dharma Hall), Cheonwangmun (Heavenly Kings Gate), Borimsa Budo (Stupa), and Borimsa Tap (Pagoda). In particular, the wooden seated Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue, designated as Jeju-do Tangible Cultural Heritage on May 15, 2002, is enshrined as the main Buddha of Borimsa Temple. This statue, crafted in the late Joseon period at Seonamsa Temple in Suncheon, Jeollanam-do, was brought to Jeju when Borimsa was founded. As Borimsa is situated at the foot of Sara-bong Peak, an oreum (volcanic cone) of Jeju, it is frequently visited not only by Buddhists but also by Jeju residents and tourists. Around the temple grounds, there are Chilmeoridang Yeongdeunggut Transmission Hall, Mochungsa Shrine, Udo Library, and the National Jeju Museum, making it worthwhile to explore these sites together on a trip to Jeju.
