A Korean department store is somewhere to eat and rest, not only to shop. A rainy or very hot day can be spent entirely inside one.

كيف تختارون
  • The first basement floor is almost always a food hall: side dishes, bakery, fruit, ready-made meals, and often seating. It isn’t cheap, but it is the fastest way to see the range of Korean food in one place.
  • The top floor is usually restaurants and a cinema. You buy on the way up and eat at the top.
  • Tax refund — at some shops you show your passport and the VAT comes off on the spot; otherwise you keep the receipts and claim at the refund desk inside the store, or at the airport before you fly. Ask at the till which one applies.
  • This is not a duty-free shop. Duty-free is for people leaving the country, and the goods are sometimes handed over at the airport. A department store you buy from and walk out with — which is why the map keeps them as separate categories.
  • Large malls have several entrances, and many connect straight to a subway station.
  • Some information desks hand out discount coupons for foreign visitors. Asking costs nothing.
