A traditional market is a permanent market where vegetables, fish, fruit, side dishes and street food are sold side by side. Every stall is its own business, so each one sets its own prices and portions.
كيف تختارون
Choose stalls that display their prices. When the price is written up you can decide without asking, and comparing one stall with another is easy.
Portions are measured differently from stall to stall — what “a plate”, “a bag” or “one fish” comes to is decided by the seller. Ask how many people it feeds and you will get an answer.
Some stalls take cash only, some take cards, and some are paid by bank transfer. Check which it is before you order.
In the food lanes the seats are tight and sharing a bench with strangers is normal. At some stalls you eat standing.
Closing days differ from market to market, and within one market from stall to stall. They are posted at the market entrance or on the shutter.
Most people bring their own bag. At some stalls a plastic one is charged for.
قبل الذهاب Ask the price and the portion before you order. Some stalls and street carts do not put prices up, and the same dish comes in different sizes at different stalls. Asking what something costs is ordinary here and is not taken as rude.
